Sprookjessymposium DOC Volksverhaal |
 Het DOC Volksverhaal, werkgroep 'Homo Narrans' organiseert op vrijdag 26 oktober 2012 op het Meertens Instituut het symposium ‘Van kikvors tot droomprins: de wording van het sprookje’. In de lezingen komen ontstaansgeschiedenis, receptie en voortbestaan van het sprookje aan de orde. Het programma is hier beschikbaar.
Met het oog op het aantal beschikbare plaatsen is aanmelding vóór 20 oktober noodzakelijk. Aanmelden kan per mail bij Marianne van Zuijlen.

Eén van de panels op het 10e SIEF congres was Shaping virtual lives: identities on the internet, georganiseerd door Theo Meder en Violetta Krawczyk-Wasilewska. Meder ging in zijn bijdrage "You have to make up your own story here": identities in cyberspace from Twitter to Second Life, in op welke identiteiten en verhalen mensen aannemen in virtuele werelden.

Call for papers Symposium Corpora Ethnographica Online, September 26-28, 2012 |

By now projects of digitization rank among everyday business in cultural sciences, but so far there are no substantial experiences in digitizing large collections and their efficient utilization on the internet. Special problems arise with digitization of handwritten ethnographical collections based on the results of vast field research activities. These huge amounts of documents are barely manageable and often in danger of decay. They need to be long-term preserved, digitized, and sustainably made accessible online by intelligent and efficient content management and retrieval techniques.
The theme of the international symposium, which will be held at the University of Rostock between September 26 and 28, 2012, includes strategies for digitization and presentation of cultural − especially ethnographical − collections and their online presentation. In the context of the project “WossiDiA”, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the symposium's hosts are currently preparing the archive of Richard Wossidlo (1859-1939) for it’s complete online presentation. The Wossidlo archive consists of historical documents about folk culture and the dialect of Mecklenburg, including more than two million handwritten notes which are highly interconnected with each other in a complex filing system.
The symposium is meant to offer a forum for discussion and exchange of experiences with other projects facing similar challenges. It attempts to bring together archives, libraries, and museums with the computer science and the disciplines of cultural sciences, such as Cultural Anthropology, Ethnology, Volkskunde/European Ethnology, Linguistics/Dialectology, and Regional History. Moreover the symposium is intended to promote digitization efforts for cultural collections and their online publication.

Op het 28e congres van de ISCLR kwamen de moderne media, legend tripping, het genre, ufo-lore, satan(isme), rampen en geruchten, de integriteit van het lichaam en etniciteit aan de orde. Na een verschuiving van de aandacht voor waarheidsvinding ten aanzien van moderne sagen naar welke gevolgen verhalen kunnen hebben in het dagelijkse leven, werd op het congres een tweede tendens duidelijk, namelijk dat het niet louter om contemporary legends moet gaan.

Op het congres Narratives Across Space and Time: Transmissions and Adaptations organiseerde Theo Meder een sessie namens de Committee for Folktales and the Internet waar hij een presentatie hield over de Nederlandse Volksverhalenbank en een mogelijk op te zetten International Folktale Database. De discussie na afloop spitste zich vooral toe op de vraag of er een centrale database moet komen, of dat er op nationaal of regionaal niveau verschillende databases moeten worden aangelegd, die dan door een internationale zoekmachine kunnen worden geharvest.
Eén van de laatste sprekers op het congres was collega Willem de Blécourt, die sprak over de evolutie van individuele sprookjes waarin metamorfoses voorkomen. De Blécourt is tijdens de General Assembly verkozen tot voorzitter van de Committee for Belief Tales.
